About the position

As Marqeta's Cloud Database Engineer II, you will build and work on the next generation of database solutions. Cloud Database Engineering owns the Tier-1, 2, and 3 business-critical relational and non-relational (Processing) databases at Marqeta. In this role, you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to Marqeta's next-generation, highly available and resilient database solutions. We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within the United States or from our Oakland office. We'd love for you to join us! The Impact You'll Have: You will contribute to the technical vision for database engineering in maintenance and Cloud migration of the relational and non-relational databases used at Marqeta. You will also contribute to the design of high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture to ensure 99.99% availability. Your work will include initiatives such as platform architecture, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, multi-AZ, and multi-region support for the database footprint. Keeping automation as the primary focus, you will ensure the design is tightly coupled with various automation to reduce manual work. Additionally, you will work on modernizing database designs and implementations to increase reliability, resiliency, and scalability of the platform. Collaboration with engineers from various teams will be essential to execute on both short- and long-term technical vision. You will also be involved in root cause analysis, remediation, and documentation efforts to effectively minimize incidents.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the technical vision for database engineering in maintenance and Cloud migration of databases.
  • Design high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture to ensure 99.99% availability.
  • Work on platform architecture, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, multi-AZ, and multi-region support for the database footprint.
  • Focus on automation to reduce manual work in database management.
  • Modernize database designs and implementations to enhance reliability, resiliency, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with engineers from various teams to execute on technical vision.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and document efforts to minimize incidents.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years experience as a backend engineer.
  • Bachelor's degree or an advanced degree with no relevant experience; or 5+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience with Cloud native databases (AWS preferred).
  • Experience with transactional RDBMS such as AWS-Aurora, AWS-RDS MySQL, Percona MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB.
  • Experience in cloud-based high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Familiarity with IaC, automation, and orchestration tools (Ansible, Terraform, SpaceLift, AWS Step Function, CloudFormation, etc.).
  • Team-oriented approach with the ability to work cross-functionally.
