About the position

Northern Trust is seeking a Principal Cloud Engineer with a focus on API Management, Automation, and Security Operations. This role is pivotal in the organization's transition to cloud technologies, requiring expertise in cloud automation engineering, application integration, and API management. The successful candidate will be responsible for building, automating, and securing multi-cloud infrastructure environments to safeguard Northern Trust's cloud-hosted assets and applications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead infrastructure-as-code (IaC) automation using tools like Terraform to enhance development team efficiency.
  • Serve as a senior technical advisor to the DevOps team, promoting cloud best practices across the enterprise.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technology options for cloud automation and vendor products to leadership.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure cloud technologies align with product roadmaps and architectural frameworks.
  • Investigate and resolve complex cloud infrastructure issues, documenting reengineering processes as necessary.
  • Participate in IT Service Management (ITSM) for cloud platform support and business operations.
  • Mentor junior DevOps engineers to enhance team capabilities.
  • Design and implement CI/CD and configuration management solutions using Azure APIM for API onboarding and security management.
  • Develop integration solutions with API registry platforms and custom developer portals.
  • Implement automated user provisioning and API access request workflows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical fields.
  • 15+ years of technology experience.
  • 6 to 10+ years of experience in cloud computing (Azure, AWS).
  • 3 to 5+ years of experience in API management and related technologies.
  • Experience with Terraform for Infrastructure as Code (IaC) automation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Azure networking tools (V-WAN, VNET, BGP, etc.).
  • Understanding of DevSecOps concepts and their implementation in existing frameworks.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Ruby, PowerShell, YAML, KQL.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies including Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe.
  • Knowledge of testing automation harnesses and frameworks.
