About the position

GovCIO is currently seeking a Cloud Engineer to support the VRE PSES contract. This full-time, fully remote position requires a hands-on software engineer who will be responsible for defining, building, testing, and deploying high-quality platform capabilities and features. The ideal candidate will ensure that the products delivered to our VA customer are of the highest quality by utilizing various testing tools and methodologies. The role involves applying system thinking to solve complex technology challenges, supporting decentralized and distributed systems, and providing platform services for other delivery teams. Key responsibilities include being accountable for the service quality and cost efficiency of the platform, designing and developing cloud infrastructure, applications, and services from specifications to release. The Cloud Engineer will integrate DevOps tooling into the software development and product life cycles, set up logging, monitors, and alerts, and analyze logs to optimize services. Additionally, the engineer will analyze business requirements to design automation and integrated systems that meet operational needs, and develop IT infrastructure automation solutions using scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, Bash, REST, YAML, and JSON. The position also requires collaboration with other IT teams, developers, and stakeholders to understand their needs and develop effective automation solutions. As a subject matter expert, the Cloud Engineer will ensure that platform decentralized infrastructure deployment capabilities are operational and continuously improved, providing expert consultancy on infrastructure setup and networking during platform deployment and implementation. The role emphasizes the importance of quality in daily artifacts check-ins, supporting collective ownership, adhering to standards and processes, and continually improving product quality through refactoring and reducing technical debts. The engineer will also focus on ensuring that platform capabilities and services are user-friendly and can be easily interconnected with other partner platforms for scalability and comprehensive service offerings.

Responsibilities

  • Define, build, test, and deploy high-quality platform capabilities and features.
  • Be accountable for service quality and cost efficiency of the platform.
  • Design and develop cloud infrastructure, applications, and services from specifications to release.
  • Integrate DevOps tooling into software development and product life cycles.
  • Set up logging, monitors, and alerts; analyze logs to optimize services.
  • Analyze business requirements to design automation and integrated systems that meet operational needs.
  • Design and develop IT infrastructure automation solutions using scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash, REST, YAML, JSON).
  • Collaborate with IT teams, developers, and stakeholders to develop effective automation solutions.
  • Provide expert consultancy on infrastructure setup and networking during platform deployment and implementation.
  • Collaborate with agile delivery teams to develop and maintain automation patterns and implement CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensure quality is built into daily artifacts check-ins and support collective ownership.
  • Focus on understanding and anticipating technical needs, usability, and ease of onboarding for end-users.
  • Ensure platform capabilities can be interconnected with other partner platforms for scalability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or above in Computer Science or related field with 10 years of experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in developing, building, and deploying into decentralized clusters/nodes, hybrid (Cloud & Edge) deployments, and developer portals/services or APIs.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation (Cloudformation, Terraform).
  • Experience with containerization (Rancher, Docker, K8S, Harbor, Helm Charts).
  • Experience with CI/CD frameworks and tools (Gitlab, Jenkins, Artifactory, Ansible).

Nice-to-haves

  • A postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc; or higher degree qualification in a relevant area).
  • Strong hands-on experience supporting CI/CD development and production pipelines at large scale.
  • Strong skills with a programming language using modular, reusable code methodologies.
  • Experience with Agile development methodology.
  • Ability to operate successfully in an unstructured, fluid environment.
