The Cloud Engineer will play a crucial role in designing, deploying, and maintaining cloud infrastructure, ensuring that our systems are scalable, resilient, and secure. This position requires a strong understanding of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, as well as experience with automation tools like Ansible, Terraform, or CloudFormation. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in cloud engineering, with a focus on optimizing performance and ensuring compliance with industry standards. In this role, the Cloud Engineer will be responsible for implementing and managing cloud architectures that support NOAA applications, monitoring cloud performance, and conducting regular security assessments. The successful candidate will also develop infrastructure as code (IaC) practices to ensure consistency across cloud environments and will be tasked with generating detailed reports on system health and security compliance. Additionally, the Cloud Engineer will work closely with stakeholders to provide cost reports and recommendations, implementing cost-saving measures to optimize resource usage. Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain cloud infrastructure leveraging platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Implement scalable and resilient cloud architectures to support the NOAA applications.
  • Monitor and optimize cloud performance, ensuring high availability and reliability of services.
  • Use tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or CloudFormation to automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure as code (IaC) practices to ensure consistency and repeatability of cloud environments.
  • Implement and manage automated patching processes to keep cloud systems secure and up-to-date.
  • Ensure cloud infrastructure adheres to industry standards and best practices, including NIST 800-53 and other relevant frameworks.
  • Conduct regular security assessments and audits to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities.
  • Generate detailed reports on cloud system health, security compliance, and performance metrics.
  • Establish alerting mechanisms to proactively identify and address potential issues.
  • Monitor and optimize cloud spending to ensure efficient use of resources and budget adherence.
  • Implement cost-saving measures such as right-sizing, reserved instances, and auto-scaling policies.
  • Provide regular cost reports and recommendations to stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in cloud engineering or a similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with automation and configuration management tools like Ansible, Terraform, or CloudFormation.
  • Understanding of cloud security best practices and compliance frameworks such as NIST 800-53.
  • Proficient in monitoring and performance optimization of cloud environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with microservices architecture and its application in cloud environments.
  • Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with hybrid cloud solutions and integration with on-premises infrastructure.
  • Previous experience in a government or research environment.
