About the position

The Cloud Operation Engineer at Highmark Health is a pivotal role that champions cloud technology and engineering support essential for advancing the organization's next-generation technologies. This intermediate-level position is responsible for adopting, expanding, maintaining, and optimizing cloud usage across the organization. The incumbent will provide engineering support for cloud technologies and automation builds, ensuring that the organization can leverage cloud solutions effectively. Staying current with new cloud offerings is crucial to meet corporate objectives and deliver expected results. In this role, the engineer will be tasked with engineering and implementing cloud-based technical architectures, migration strategies, and deployment of cloud resources. They will also focus on application optimizations that utilize automation technologies and sound redundant solutions to meet business objectives. A significant part of the job involves defining cloud resource procurement and performance patterns by monitoring and tracking usage trends to optimize cloud spending and resource efficiency. The Cloud Operation Engineer will propose innovative ideas, designs, and solutions to senior or lead engineers to enhance cloud service utilization and optimization. They will develop automation scripts and repeatable patterns to facilitate application and service teams in deploying software and services into cloud environments. Additionally, the role includes conducting research and analysis for new cloud deployment proposals and existing service modifications, ultimately providing sound recommendations for the best course of action. The engineer will also handle Level 2 incident, problem, and change management related to cloud operations, develop documentation to support operational processes, and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer & implement cloud-based technical architectures, migration approaches, deployment of cloud resources and application optimizations that utilize automation technologies.
  • Define cloud resource procurement and performance patterns through monitoring and tracking of usage and trends to optimize cloud spend & resource efficiency.
  • Propose ideas, designs, and solutions to senior or lead engineers to further cloud service utilization and optimization.
  • Develop automation scripts and other repeatable patterns to enable application and service teams to deploy software and services into cloud environments.
  • Perform research and analysis required for new cloud deployment proposals, existing cloud service modification, and other new cloud adoption to provide sound recommendations.
  • Manage Level 2 incident, problem and change management as it pertains to the responsibilities of the cloud operations engineering team.
  • Develop documentation to support operations process, procedures and implementations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Cloud Computing, Computer & Information Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 years of experience with at least two modern programming languages (Java, JavaScript, BASH, PowerShell, etc.).
  • Experience providing operational support for at least one of the following cloud service providers: Google Cloud Platform, Azure, or Amazon Web Services.
  • GCP, AWS, Azure or other Cloud Service Certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience producing code that is fault-tolerant, efficient, and maintainable.
  • Experience designing, building, and deploying scalable cloud-based solution architectures through automation tools like Terraform or Ansible and version control via GitLab or similar tools.
  • Experience with standard IT security practices such as identity and access management, data protection, encryption, certificate and key management.
  • Knowledge of containerization and container orchestration technologies such as Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
