About the position

Nextworld, a high-growth software development company based in the Denver Tech Center, is seeking a Cloud Operations Engineer to join their Cloud Operations team, specifically focused on the EAP product. This role is pivotal in designing and implementing automation to streamline operations within a cloud environment. The Cloud Operations Engineer will be responsible for creating cost-effective solutions that enhance the scalability of Cloud Operations, ensuring that the infrastructure is robust and efficient. As a member of the team, the Cloud Operations Engineer will engage in technical execution by anticipating and validating stakeholder requirements and user stories. They will evaluate high-level stories and break them down into manageable tasks for the team. The engineer will also identify issues in large designs, collaborating with team members and leadership to address these challenges. Security best practices will be a key consideration in all design creations and reviews, ensuring that the solutions are not only effective but also secure. In addition to technical execution, the role involves troubleshooting and monitoring. The engineer will participate in an on-call rotation, identifying issues and providing timely solutions with justifications. They will utilize diagnostic tools to isolate problems efficiently and recommend action items to resolve root causes. Monitoring the availability and performance of infrastructure components, including AWS cloud resources and automation jobs, will be a critical part of the role, as will proposing new systems for effective monitoring of cloud services. Collaboration is also a significant aspect of this position. The Cloud Operations Engineer will participate in agile ceremonies to share progress and address blockers, helping team members resolve issues as they arise. They will document automation processes and tools, providing training to operations staff during rollouts. Mentoring junior engineers in various technical areas will also be part of their responsibilities, fostering a culture of learning and growth within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipates and validates stakeholder requirements and user stories.
  • Evaluates high-level stories and creates broken down tasks for team to consume.
  • Identifies issues in a large design and raises those issues, working with team members and leadership to address them.
  • Defines optimal design solution and technical approach for a task.
  • Considers security best practices in design creation and review.
  • Designs, builds and maintains automation tools to streamline cloud operations and reduce manual effort.
  • Designs automated workflows for various operational processes, enhancing efficiency and consistency.
  • Clearly defines work on a small-scale and large-scale level for the platform.
  • Proposes cost optimized solutions in design review.
  • Participates in the on-call rotation.
  • Identifies issues, provides options, and has a timely, preferred solution with justification.
  • Uses diagnostic tooling and techniques to isolate the problem efficiently, recommending action items to resolve root cause.
  • Monitors availability and performance of infrastructure components, including AWS cloud resources, database, and automation jobs.
  • Proposes new systems to effectively monitor and report on the status of cloud services.
  • Participates in agile ceremonies to share progress and blockers.
  • Helps team members identify and resolve issues that are communicated.
  • Understands how the different products relate to different groups within the organization.
  • Relies on relationships with stakeholder teams to engage appropriate expertise in gathering, project review, and project rollout.
  • Documents automation processes and tools, and provides training to operations staff as part of rollout.
  • Mentors more junior level Engineers in a variety of technical areas.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (e.g., CDK, CloudFormation) and containerization/orchestration (Docker, ECS).
  • Strong background in DevOps practices and scripting (Python, Bash, Java, Groovy).
  • Solid understanding of cloud networking, security best practices, and monitoring/logging tools.
  • Bachelor Science degree (or higher) in Computer Science, or in another relevant field of study (B.A. Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Math), or a combination of education and equivalent work experience.
  • 2 - 5 years' experience with AWS, including cloud architecture, services, and best practices.
