About the position

Boston Public Schools (BPS) seeks an exceptional Cluster Substitute Teacher who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. Cluster Substitute Teachers are those teachers assigned to a single school to cover teacher absences for ten days or fewer per absence. Assignments at the school may be subject to change daily. The Cluster Substitute Teacher will report to the Principal/Headmaster of the school and is expected to demonstrate accountability for student achievement, set ambitious learning goals, and create cognitively demanding tasks. They will assess students' understanding regularly and take ownership of making necessary adjustments to instruction to reach goals despite setbacks. The ideal candidate will be passionate and optimistic about their students, their content, and the teaching profession. They will demonstrate mastery of and enthusiasm for their content area and the pedagogy it requires, and convey content in creative and engaging ways that align with standards. The role also requires the ability to scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet diverse needs, build a productive learning environment, and engage with families to build collaborative relationships in service of student learning. Professional reflection and collaboration are key components of this role, as the Cluster Substitute Teacher will regularly reflect on their practice, seek and respond to feedback, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and development. They will also seek to participate in and contribute to a collaborative adult learning community.

Responsibilities

  • Cover teacher absences for ten days or fewer per absence at a single school.
  • Set ambitious learning goals for all students and create cognitively demanding tasks.
  • Assess students' understanding regularly and adjust instruction as necessary.
  • Demonstrate mastery of content area and convey it in engaging ways.
  • Scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an undergraduate college/university degree.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.
  • Successfully complete a screening interview with the BPS Office of Human Capital.
  • Pass a CORI/SORI criminal background check.

Nice-to-haves

  • Massachusetts Teaching License in assigned content and grade level, including SEI Endorsement if applicable.
  • Experience in a school or community setting working with children or young adults.
  • Experience teaching in urban schools.
  • Fluency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
