About the position

Boston Public Schools (BPS) is seeking an exceptional Cluster Substitute Teacher who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. This position offers an exciting opportunity for educators who wish to make a significant impact in a supportive environment that values creativity and innovation. The Cluster Substitute Teacher will be assigned to a single school to cover teacher absences for ten days or fewer per absence, with assignments potentially changing daily. This role is crucial in maintaining the continuity of education and ensuring that all students have access to high-quality instruction during their teachers' absences. As a Cluster Substitute Teacher, you will be expected to set ambitious learning goals for all students, create cognitively demanding tasks, and model the belief that all students can master challenging material through effective effort. You will regularly assess students' understanding and make necessary adjustments to instruction to reach these goals, demonstrating a passion for your students and the teaching profession. The ideal candidate will demonstrate mastery of their content area and enthusiasm for teaching, conveying knowledge in creative and engaging ways that align with educational standards. You will be responsible for scaffolding and differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of students, fostering a safe and productive learning environment where every student feels valued. Engaging with families and building collaborative relationships will also be a key aspect of your role, as will reflecting on your practice and contributing to a collaborative adult learning community. This position reports directly to the Principal or Headmaster of the school.

Responsibilities

  • Cover teacher absences for ten days or fewer per absence.
  • Create and implement lesson plans that align with educational standards.
  • Assess students' understanding and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Engage with families to build collaborative relationships in support of student learning.
  • Foster a safe and productive learning environment for all students.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Participate in a collaborative adult learning community and reflect on teaching practices.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an undergraduate college/university degree.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.
  • Successfully complete a screening interview with the BPS Office of Human Capital.
  • Pass a CORI/SORI criminal background check.

Nice-to-haves

  • Massachusetts Teaching License in assigned content and grade level, including SEI Endorsement if applicable.
  • Experience in a school or community setting working with children or young adults.
  • Experience teaching in urban schools.
  • Fluency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
