About the position

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) position is responsible for administering medications to residents in accordance with facility policies and procedures. The role involves ensuring the accuracy and safety of medication administration, maintaining documentation, and collaborating with nursing staff and physicians to enhance medication management processes.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents.
  • Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
  • Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to determine medication errors and how they can be prevented.
  • Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, charts, and reports.
  • Maintain a friendly, productive working relationship with nursing staff, attending physicians, and pharmacists.
  • Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in facility surveys and inspections as requested.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance programs and committees affecting medication processes.
  • Accurately prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications for residents.
  • Verify medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
  • Follow facility policies regarding the destruction of medications and assist in documentation requirements.
  • Ensure all medications administered are properly labeled and documented.
  • Assist in documenting and removing medications discontinued by the attending physician.
  • Follow procedures for drug receipt errors and notify the appropriate personnel.
  • Ensure documentation of drug receipt errors includes a written error report.
  • Follow procedures for holding medications for residents who are transferred or have discontinued medications.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
  • Document instances where prescribed medication is not administered and notify appropriate nursing staff.
  • Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication treatment.
  • Accurately measure, record, and report the vital signs of residents.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Medication Aide or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in medication administration.
  • Knowledge of medication administration policies and procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents and healthcare team members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in a nursing home or assisted living facility.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Basic understanding of pharmacology and medication management.
