About the position

The CMT (Construction Materials Testing) Department Engineer at UES is responsible for overseeing the testing and inspection of construction materials to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and safety regulations. This role involves managing a team of technicians and collaborating with project managers, contractors, and engineers to ensure quality and compliance throughout the construction process.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and conduct field and laboratory tests on construction materials, including soil, concrete, aggregates, and structural steel.
  • Analyze test results to ensure materials comply with project specifications, industry standards (ASTM, AASHTO), and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage CMT projects from inception to completion, including planning, coordinating, and scheduling fieldwork and laboratory activities.
  • Prepare and review project reports, summaries, and data analysis for clients, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Supervise and mentor field and laboratory technicians, ensuring that proper testing methods and protocols are followed.
  • Perform on-site inspections to verify compliance with construction specifications, including foundation work, concrete pours, compaction testing, and paving operations.
  • Review field and lab data for accuracy and consistency, ensuring reliable results.
  • Provide recommendations for improvements in testing procedures or materials to enhance project quality.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, providing updates, technical support, and addressing any concerns related to material testing.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, geotechnical teams, and other departments to provide feedback on material performance and suitability.
  • Stay updated on the latest codes, regulations, and testing standards to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Prepare technical reports, including analysis, recommendations, and summaries of material testing results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license.
  • 5+ years of experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical engineering, or construction engineering.
  • Proficiency in materials testing methods and standards (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO, DOT).
  • Knowledge of testing equipment for soil compaction and concrete strength.
  • Familiarity with software for data analysis and reporting (e.g., AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel).
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for client interaction and report preparation.
  • Problem-solving abilities to address material failures or testing discrepancies.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills to manage and train technicians.
