About the position

As the CNC General Machinist at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), you will play a crucial role in the operation and maintenance of CNC machinery within the university's facilities management department. Your primary responsibility will be to adjust machines to control speed, material feed, and the path of the cut, ensuring that all machines are set up correctly, functioning optimally, and producing high-quality output. This position requires a hands-on approach to assist students with the fabrication of course-related projects, utilizing CNC technology effectively in the shop environment. You will also provide support for departmental and university infrastructure, creating parts for special projects, renovations, and construction as needed. In this role, clear communication with students is essential. You will be expected to convey necessary procedures and information regarding CNC usage, edit student CAD files as required, and program and execute three and five-axis CNC projects using Mastercam. Collaboration with the operations coordinator and shop staff is vital to assist students with their projects effectively. Additionally, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the lab for all SCAD members, adhering to all SCAD and OSHA policies and procedures. Maintaining a professional appearance and being able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime when necessary, are also key aspects of this position.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Relevant CNC experience.
  • Experience with Rhinoceros, Solidworks, or similar software with proficiency in three-dimensional modeling.
  • Detail-oriented approach to work with the ability to multitask in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of wood, wood processes, and woodworking machinery.
  • Ability to measure dimensions of finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Ability to review program specifications to determine and set machine operations and sequencing.
  • Ability to request maintenance and repair of equipment as needed.
  • Familiarity with the School of Design studio equipment, techniques, and safety procedures.
