About the position

The CNC Programmer Machinist is responsible for programming and operating various commercial factory machines to transform raw materials into usable components. This role involves working from technical drawings and verbal instructions to set up and operate CNC work centers, ensuring the fabrication of complex component parts. The position requires advanced knowledge of machining techniques, programming, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve operational issues independently.

Responsibilities

  • Install and adjust various types of tooling and fixtures in work centers based on drawings and instructions.
  • Calculate and write programs for CNC work centers to fabricate component parts to engineering specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems concerning machining operations, tools, materials, and CNC programs independently.
  • Perform secondary machining operations on component parts as required.
  • Analyze component parts configuration to determine efficient machining operations for production.
  • Load computer programs into CNC work centers and adjust machine speeds/feeds as necessary.
  • Process first piece through initial run, making critical adjustments to tooling and programs.
  • Operate and monitor work centers for progressive machining operations such as turning, boring, drilling, tapping, and reaming.
  • Fabricate simple holding fixtures for machining as needed.
  • Inspect parts for dimensions and surface imperfections to prepare for production.
  • Collaborate with engineering and supervisory personnel to resolve design and operational difficulties.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance duties.
  • Assist in training lower-level machinists and review completed work assignments.

Requirements

  • AAS Degree in Machine Technology preferred.
  • Minimum of seven years of CNC programming experience or ten years of manual machining experience required.
  • Broad knowledge of machining techniques for advanced setup operations.
  • Proficient in using cutting tools and measuring equipment.
  • Capable of reading and understanding technical drawings.
  • Demonstrated experience in training lower-level machinists.
  • Formal training in CNC Programming and capable of programming complex controls on various CNC equipment.
  • Competent programming skills with modeling software such as Esprit, MasterCam, Cad Cam, Smart Cam.
  • Expertise in operating multiple axis/spindle machines.
  • Thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience in cutting tool fabrication and leading process improvement initiatives.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of CMM operations is preferred.
  • Experience with new CNC tooling and technology features.
