About the position

Morris South is seeking a Principal Automation Engineer to integrate mechanical and robotic machine tending solutions to CNC multi-axis lathes and mills. This role involves working with a variety of automation systems and requires a strong technical background in engineering, particularly in automation and robotics. The position offers opportunities to work in a fast-paced environment and contribute to improving productivity for manufacturers across the southeast U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the electrical and mechanical integration of robotic and mechanical loading and unloading systems to CNC machine tools.
  • Assemble and integrate custom designed loading, unloading, and parts handling systems including switches, PLCs, solenoid valves, and electric or pneumatic cylinders/actuators.
  • Travel to customer locations to install systems and provide necessary support.
  • Write controls specifications defining the functional scope of controls and the I/O requirements.
  • Develop electrical drawing packages to meet customer specifications and system requirements.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain robot mechanical units and controllers and electrical control devices.
  • Develop operator manuals and wiring schematics.
  • Support field installation, startup, and debug of systems.
  • Administer customer training sessions as needed.
  • Support demonstration systems intended for use at trade shows or customer floors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, automation, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in systems engineering, design, assembly, and/or material handling, preferably related to robotic/automation systems.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and schematics.
  • Experience developing control logic associated with the integration of robotic or mechanical systems.
  • Technical aptitude, strong problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel up to 80% of the time.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with FANUC Ladder-III PMC programming software.
  • Experience with ROBOGuide Simulation software.
  • Proficient with Rockwell, Siemens, or other PLC programming software.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Siemens NX.
  • Familiarity with standard machining practices, tooling, fixtures, and gauges.
