About the position

The CO Captain - Interdiction position at the Florida Department of Corrections involves overseeing canine operations to prevent contraband introduction into correctional facilities. The role requires maintaining a detection canine, conducting searches, and developing intelligence for interdiction operations. This position is a promotional opportunity for current Correctional Officer Lieutenants and Sergeants with canine handling experience.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a detection canine for the Department on a full-time basis.
• Conduct searches on and off Department property, including staff, visitors, and inmates.
• Organize and execute canine operations to prevent contraband introduction.
• Develop strategic and tactical intelligence for interdiction operations.
• Conduct physical searches consistent with Florida law and FDC procedures.
• Collect evidence and maintain a chain of custody according to law enforcement practices.
• Maintain the health and training of the assigned canine.
• Conduct canine screenings in various locations for narcotics detection.
• Participate in operational planning for daily and special operations.
• Conduct interviews to identify contraband introduction routes.
• Conduct surveillance as required.
• Communicate findings and intelligence to supervisors for operational planning.
• Document interviews with inmates suspected of being in Security Threat Groups.
• Assist Canine Interdiction Officers during screenings and special operations.
• Lead and assist in weekly trainings with Canine Interdiction Officers.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Florida Driver's License.
• Current valid certification as a Correctional Officer by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Correctional Officer.
• Basic canine handling experience.
