About the position

The Code Compliance Officer is responsible for inspecting and enforcing city, county, and state laws related to environmental hazards on public and private properties. This role involves monitoring compliance with municipal codes, investigating violations, and providing customer service to educate citizens about code requirements. The officer will work independently, requiring effective communication skills and the ability to handle challenging situations with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor premises and activities to ensure compliance with municipal codes.
  • Investigate alleged violations of laws, codes, and regulations related to environmental hazards.
  • Respond to complaints regarding land use code and health violations.
  • Provide customer service by explaining codes and potential violations to the public.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports for court cases.
  • Coordinate with other City departments and agencies on code compliance projects.
  • Secure and board up abandoned and condemned properties and unfenced pools.
  • Remove illegal signs from the City right of way.
  • Prepare written monthly and quarterly reports for the Development Services Director.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of code compliance experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Completion of the Basic Code Enforcement course by TEEX and certification as a Code Enforcement Officer within 18 months of employment.
  • Valid Class 'C' Texas driver's license prior to employment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and criminal history background check.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual (Spanish) communication skills preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
