About the position

The City of Ogdensburg is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations. This role involves conducting inspections, maintaining certifications, and completing necessary training to uphold safety standards in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of buildings and properties to ensure compliance with local codes and regulations.
  • Review plans and specifications for construction projects to ensure adherence to building codes.
  • Issue permits and certificates of occupancy as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and enforcement actions taken.
  • Provide guidance and information to property owners and contractors regarding code requirements.
  • Attend training sessions to maintain certification and stay updated on code changes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or Fire Protection and Safety from a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university; OR
  • Associate's Degree in the aforementioned fields and one year of full-time paid experience in building or fire prevention inspection, building construction work, or in a building trade; OR
  • Possession of a New York State Department of State Code Enforcement Certification and completion of necessary training; OR
  • Three years of full-time paid experience in building or fire prevention inspection, building construction work, or in a building trade.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in municipal code enforcement or related field.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions based on regulations.
