About the position

The Coder I position at Adirondack Medical Center serves as an apprenticeship role for individuals looking to gain experience in medical coding. The role involves learning various specialty practices and preparing for a transition into a primary coding role. Responsibilities include working with insurance denials and claim holds, performing coding in accordance with established guidelines, and ensuring accurate coding of medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Learn different specialty practices in preparation for transitioning into a primary coding role.
  • Work on regular insurance denials and claim holds using coding scrubber software.
  • Perform coding in accordance with Adirondack Health approved guidelines, CMS, and AMA coding guidelines.
  • Review and accurately code medical records with appropriate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, HCPCS, and Evaluation and Management codes.
  • Classify inpatient medical records to the correct MDC/DRG based on payment methodology.
  • Run Ambulatory Surgery patient records through the APC finder for edits and group them into APC or APG.
  • Generate Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits and Medical Necessity edits on all coded cases and work these edits for clean claims submission.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Enrollment in AAPC or AHIMA coding course leading to a coding credential required within 6 months of hire.
  • Current enrollment in coding course preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology preferred.
  • Moderate level of interpersonal skills necessary to interact with Medical Staff, Administration, and Quality Management.
