About the position

The Coder III position at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center is responsible for coding all hospital discharges and clinic visits to ensure accurate reimbursement, compliance with federal regulations, and support for research initiatives. This role requires proficiency in the ICD-10-CM classification system and CPT 4 procedural codes, along with a commitment to quality and adherence to official coding guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and code all hospital discharge and clinic visit records for reimbursement and compliance using ICD-10-CM and CPT 4 classification systems.
  • Review entire medical records to assign and report the most appropriate codes.
  • Abstract statistical data from hospital records using encoder or abstracting programs.
  • Follow up on incomplete records to ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and hospital regulations.
  • Communicate with the Coding Coordinator regarding any clarifications needed for accurate coding and abstraction.
  • Meet 95% quality coding indicators monthly, addressing billing issues, keying errors, abstracting errors, and coding errors.

Requirements

  • One of the following certifications is required: RHIT, RHIA, CCS.
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Formal training in ICD-9-CM and CPT 4 classification is required.
