About the position

The Coder at NorthEast Provider Solutions Inc. is responsible for accurately coding medical records, including diagnoses and procedures, using established coding systems such as ICD, CPT, and HCPCS. This role involves entering coded information into an automated system and ensuring compliance with coding standards. The Coder will also provide support and information regarding medical documentation to hospital staff and compile reports based on medical records.

Responsibilities

• Assign and record accurate codes to all diagnoses, procedures, and operations in patient medical records using HCPCS, ICD, and CPT coding systems.
• Ensure all necessary factors for assigning an accurate DRG are present and that diagnoses are ranked properly.
• Contact relevant personnel to acquire or clarify necessary information for coding.
• Enter final diagnostic code numbers and narrative descriptions into an automated grouper system.
• Respond to inquiries regarding medical documentation and DRGs from hospital staff.
• Abstract information from medical records to compile reports and statistical data.
• Enter data such as diagnosis, treatment, admission and discharge dates into a hospital-wide or regional automated database.

Requirements

• Two years of experience in medical records coding in or for a hospital.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in health information management may substitute for one year of experience.
• Current certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P), or Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
• Thorough knowledge of HCPCS, CPT, and ICD codes.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and principles of the medical record system.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
• Proficiency in computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, and database software.
