About the position

The Coder at St. Joseph's Medical Center is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedural codes to patient charts of moderate to high complexity using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems. This role requires adherence to ethical coding standards and involves abstracting clinical information from medical records, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, and maintaining high accuracy in coding practices. The position also involves collaboration with various departments to resolve coding issues and improve documentation quality.

Responsibilities

  • Assign diagnostic and procedural codes to patient charts using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.
  • Abide by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by AHIMA.
  • Abstract required clinical information from medical records.
  • Review medical records for accurate assignment of diagnoses and procedures.
  • Achieve 95% or higher accuracy in coding.
  • Stay current with coding guidelines and regulations.
  • Attend mandatory coding seminars and quarterly updates.
  • Communicate and resolve coding issues with appropriate follow-up.
  • Work collaboratively with CDI, Quality, and facility leadership.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience coding day surgery, observation records, ER, and ancillary records.
  • RHIT and/or CCS registration or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of MS-DRG and APR DRG classification and reimbursement structures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with compliant physician querying writing.
  • Knowledge of AHA Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines.
