About the position

The Coding Educator (CE) plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with TPR coding guidelines, payer policies, and governmental regulations. This position is responsible for providing continuous coding education to clinicians and support staff, preventing coding denials through quality analysis, and acting as a liaison with coding vendors. The CE will also conduct audits, monitor coding accuracy, and track performance to enhance coding practices within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and monitor billing clearance per TPR policy for newly onboarded clinicians and staff.
  • Provide continual coding education to clinicians and ancillary staff in compliance with TPR coding policies and regulations.
  • Identify and mitigate risks by ensuring accurate coding of billed services.
  • Research updated coding information and proactively educate providers and staff.
  • Monitor coding patterns, perform audits, and provide feedback to clinicians and staff.
  • Review and respond to coding questions from clinicians and ancillary staff.
  • Analyze benchmark to actual coding-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Monitor and track coding holds and denials.
  • Develop a strategic plan to prevent coding holds and denials with benchmarks and milestones.
  • Act as a coding vendor liaison, leading interactions between the vendor and assigned markets.
  • Develop a recovery plan for coding errors as approved by the regional coding director.
  • Organize and participate in coding team meetings.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in Anatomy and Physiology preferred.
  • 2-3 years of coding, training, or auditing experience in a multi-specialty medical environment required.
  • Strong knowledge of Medical Terminology is required.
  • Strong communicative skills and ability to foster positive interactions with clinicians and staff are essential.
  • Knowledge of government regulations for coding and documentation for professional coding is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • AHIMA or AAPC coding credentialed, CPC or CCS preferred.
