About the position

The Coding Specialist III position at Kootenai Health involves evaluating medical records and assigning appropriate clinical diagnoses and procedure codes in accordance with nationally recognized coding guidelines. This role is essential for the development of an organization-wide database and the submission of accurate hospital claims. The position requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, as well as effective communication with medical staff to ensure correct code assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately codes diagnoses and procedural information in EPIC/3M 360 according to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS principles and conventions for all inpatient accounts.
  • Works the following work queues, as assigned: KH Coding Inpatient, KH Coding - Interim Bill.
  • May complete or assist with coding specialist II duties, as directed based on business need.
  • Meets minimum quality and productivity standards, sending weekly productivity reports to the supervisor.
  • Provides excellent service experience to all customers of Kootenai Health by demonstrating Performance Imperatives.
  • Queries members of the medical staff for clarification in cases where documentation is unclear or insufficient for correct code assignment.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance as an essential job function.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, competent to meet age-specific needs of the unit assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Coding certification; RHIT, RHIA, CCS or CCS-P required.
  • 3 years' experience in hospital coding preferred.
  • Effective human relation skills for interacting with all levels of hospital staff, including physicians.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding conventions and coding principles.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Thorough knowledge of ICD/DRG coding optimization.
