About the position

The Coding Specialist - Outpatient is responsible for coding and abstracting outpatient medical records in compliance with established coding conventions and guidelines. This role requires a strong understanding of health information management and coding practices, as well as effective communication skills to interact with clinical and non-clinical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Code and abstract outpatient medical records according to established guidelines.
  • Maintain unit-specific and hospital competencies and mandatory learning requirements.
  • Complete and submit physician queries as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical and non-clinical staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills necessary for the position.
  • Work independently and prioritize tasks to produce quality work in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or Coding, preferred.
  • AHIMA Certifications (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P) or AAPC Certifications (CPC, CPC-H) required upon hire/transfer or within 12 months of hire/transfer.
  • 1+ years of outpatient facility coding or related experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Pathophysiology, disease processes, Pharmacology, and Medical Terminology.
  • Familiarity with Meditech and 3M Coding and Reimbursement System, preferred.

Nice-to-haves
