The Collections and Foreclosure Paralegal (COFO Paralegal) plays a crucial role in supporting attorneys by performing a variety of tasks related to collections and foreclosure processes. This position involves researching laws, investigating facts, scheduling court hearings, and preparing necessary documents. The COFO Paralegal will communicate with clients and loan officers, assist in drafting paperwork, and ensure compliance with legal standards, particularly the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and related state laws. The role requires a proactive approach to managing case files, preparing legal documents, and ensuring that all legal work is complete before closing files. The COFO Paralegal will also be responsible for preparing various legal motions, notices, and judgments, as well as maintaining organized records of court pleadings and communications. This position is essential for ensuring that the legal processes are handled efficiently and effectively, contributing to the overall success of the firm’s legal operations.

Responsibilities

  • Research law and investigate facts related to collections and foreclosure cases.
  • Schedule court hearings and prepare necessary legal documents.
  • Communicate with delinquent owners via phone, email, and letter correspondence.
  • Process payments from owners and prepare balance due letters, payoff letters, and estoppels.
  • Prepare initial demand letters, notice of intent to foreclose letters, and liens.
  • Generate complaint packages and all foreclosure motions.
  • Prepare stipulations for settlement and the motion for summary judgment, including necessary affidavits.
  • Prepare and generate all notices of hearing and final judgments, including the notice of sale.
  • Ensure all legal work is complete for file closure and manage outstanding invoices.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • 2 or more years of experience in a paralegal role or related field.
  • Proficiency in software tools including Word, Excel, Outlook, and the Internet.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills for internal and external clients.
  • Ability to identify and solve issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task effectively.
  • Conscientious regarding work completion, deadlines, time management, and attendance.
  • Analytical and detail-oriented, capable of working at a fast pace.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in collections and foreclosure law.
  • Familiarity with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and related state laws.
