About the position

The Collections Archivist at Whitman College is responsible for curating and managing archival materials that document the history of the college and the Walla Walla region. This role involves developing workflows for the accessioning, arrangement, and description of various archival materials, including digital formats. The archivist will also oversee the preservation of digital materials and manage the college's digital repository, ARMINDA, while promoting the use of these collections for teaching and research.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement workflows for the accessioning, arrangement, and description of archival materials.
  • Oversee born-digital processing and audiovisual format migrations.
  • Survey collections and prioritize processing workflows.
  • Manage the preservation of digital materials and strategize for their continued relevancy.
  • Create collection management records and track events, containers, and locations.
  • Manage ArchivesSpace software and collaborate on digitization projects.
  • Assist in conducting reference interviews and staffing the public service desk.
  • Work with institutional offices and community partners to promote archival collections.
  • Train and supervise student archives assistants on processing and digitization projects.
  • Participate in library-wide teams and campus committees.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an ALA accredited program with an emphasis in archival management.
  • One year of professional or pre-professional experience in archival processing.
  • Ability to provide reference, outreach, and collection management services.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with ArchivesSpace or other archival management systems.
  • Knowledge of descriptive systems including DACS, EAD, XML, MARC21.
  • Experience in born-digital processing and digital preservation.
  • Familiarity with audio-visual digitization and reformatting.
  • Knowledge of the history and culture of the inland Pacific Northwest.
  • Experience supervising student workers.
  • Familiarity with Spanish.
