About the position

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is seeking a full-time Collections Center Relocation Registrar for a fixed-term position expected to conclude in spring 2028. This role involves leading the organization and implementation of the relocation of collections from the current offsite location to the new Collections Center, ensuring the safe and efficient handling of artworks throughout the process.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement the relocation of collections housed at the current offsite location to the new Collections Center.
  • Work with MFA staff, vendors, and consultants to develop, plan, and complete safe packing for the move.
  • Develop secure transit plans and schedule shipments of artwork to the Collections Center.
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff assisting with the move to the Collections Center.
  • Coordinate documentation of object movement, including barcoding of artworks and object inventory documentation.
  • Track costs, approve invoices, plan future budgets, and review contracts with vendors as needed.
  • Collaborate with curators, conservators, Facilities staff, and consultants to design workspaces and storage spaces in the Collections Center.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders inside and outside the Museum.
  • Compile documentation and statistics about the move for reporting purposes and present to staff and Trustees as requested.
  • Participate in scheduling and space use conversations to accomplish goals and meet deadlines.
  • Respond quickly and effectively in crisis situations to ensure safety of MFA staff and collections while in transit or onsite.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an art-related field or equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • 5-7 years of museum registrar experience preferred, with demonstrated experience in collections moves, art handling, and packing.
  • Project management experience and experience developing a budget and managing costs.
  • Ability to execute physical work, including carrying boxes and objects of approximately 25 pounds and moving around large warehouse spaces.
  • Proficiency in working with electronic data/collections databases.
  • Ability to perform tasks in a professional manner and with discretion when working with confidential records.
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally; must have a driver's license and an automobile for transportation between MFA locations.
