About the position

The College and Career Coach plays a pivotal role in preparing students from Chicago Public Schools for their post-secondary journeys. This position is centered around implementing effective strategies that enhance students' awareness, readiness, access, and success in pursuing college and career opportunities. The coach will work directly with high school students, providing tailored services that align with the Department of College and Career Preparation (DCCP) objectives. The overarching goal is to ensure that every student is equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to transition smoothly into their post-secondary endeavors. In this role, the College and Career Coach will develop and execute implementation plans that are in line with the DCCP scorecard and metrics. Collaboration is key, as the coach will work alongside specialists and higher education officials to forge partnerships that facilitate the matriculation and retention of CPS students. The coach will also conduct ongoing college access workshops for all grade levels, advising students on various college and career opportunities available to them. The responsibilities extend to organizing monthly workshops focused on critical areas such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), ACT/SAT test preparation, and essential skills like writing, time management, and study techniques. Additionally, the coach will coordinate job shadowing experiences, career speaker events, and college tours, all aimed at enriching students' understanding of their future options. The role also involves supporting the recruitment of students for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and internships, ensuring that students meet the necessary soft skills requirements for employment readiness. Overall, the College and Career Coach is instrumental in guiding students through their academic and career pathways, fostering a supportive environment that encourages growth and success.

Responsibilities

  • Increase college and career options for students by implementing key strategies that align with the Department of College and Career Preparation (DCCP)
  • Develop implementation plans that align with the DCCP score card and metrics
  • Collaborate with specialists and higher education officials to build partnerships that support matriculation and retention of CPS students
  • Conduct ongoing college access workshops for all grade levels that advise students about college and career opportunities
  • Participate in ongoing coach and counselor integrated support strategies using the American School Counselors (ASCA) implementation plan
  • Conduct monthly workshops that inform and prepare students in grades 9-12 for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Conduct comprehensive workshops that prepare students for the What's Next IL Guideway completions
  • Coordinate job shadow, career speaker, and career service events that promote college and career preparation
  • Support the recruitment of students for Career and Technical Education (CTE) for citywide CTE academies
  • Recruit students for CTE internships and support employment opportunities
  • Coordinate with CTE teachers and counselors to ensure that students complete soft-skills requirements necessary to meet work-ready criteria
  • Organize and conduct college tours for grades 9-12
  • Conduct workshops that focus on ACT/SAT test preparation for students
  • Conduct workshops that focus on writing, time management, and study skills
  • Attend monthly DCCP Coach professional development meetings
  • Participate in scheduled planning sessions to develop key tools and strategies that promote the department's work
  • Organize college and career fairs

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited college or university with a minimum bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Three years of relevant work experience
  • Possess a car and valid driver's license
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of academic and career development
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, and representatives from universities, businesses, and community organizations
  • Proficiency in Windows Operating System and MS Office
  • Strong internet skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain partnerships
  • Team player mentality
