About the position

The College and Career Mentor (Casual) position at the University of Hawai'i involves supporting first-year college students through workshops and outreach initiatives. This part-time, temporary role focuses on collaboration with peer mentors and assisting in various educational programs aimed at underrepresented populations in postsecondary education.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with college peer mentors to organize and facilitate workshops and events for first-year college students.
  • Assist college peer mentors in their nudging initiative by reviewing communications, tracking responses, and maintaining an updated tracking system.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating toolkits and guidebooks for training college peer mentors and supporting outreach initiatives.
  • Support outreach efforts at GEAR UP middle and high schools by assisting with onboarding, college & career fairs, and classroom presentations.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and word processing software.
  • Strong capability using Zoom and Signal for communication purposes.
  • Experience working with students from underrepresented populations in postsecondary education.
  • Working knowledge of cultures, history, and languages of Hawaii's academically underserved populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate program requirements and financial aid processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with the University of Hawaii, the State of Hawaii Department of Education, and/or college access programs in Hawaii.
  • Familiarity with GEAR UP program and Hawaii P-20.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with virtual engagement for students and family members.
  • Familiarity with design software such as Canva and Adobe Suite.

Benefits

  • Salary of $23.00 per hour
  • Part-time temporary position not exceeding 19 hours per week
