About the position

The College Counselor at Henderson Collegiate High School plays a crucial role in guiding high school students through the college application process. This position focuses on equipping students and their families with the necessary skills, resources, and knowledge to successfully apply to and attend quality colleges and universities. The counselor will teach seminar classes, develop a college prep curriculum, and provide personalized support to students, ensuring they are prepared for college and career readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Teach daily junior and senior seminar classes focused on the college application process.
  • Design and develop a rigorous College Prep curriculum that prepares students for college entry assessments and the application process.
  • Lead students in whole-class and small-group settings, fostering intellectual curiosity and a love of learning.
  • Facilitate opportunities for students to explore colleges and careers, including college trips and guest lectures.
  • Meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to help identify suitable colleges based on their academic performance and personal preferences.
  • Engage families in the college application process and maintain strong communication about student progress.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to create a professional atmosphere conducive to constant improvement and professional development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in college counseling or related roles in the K-12 space.
  • Experience teaching in a low-income community with a demonstrated ability to raise achievement levels of underserved students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with high-stakes college entry assessments like the ACT and SAT.
  • Familiarity with financial aid processes and scholarship opportunities.
