About the position

The general purpose of this job is to contribute to meeting the goals and objectives of Detroit Mercy’s King Chavez Parks (KCP) Program: Connections. The College Life Coach will support the academic success of students who are identified as being economically and/or academically disadvantaged and to provide direct service to identified students based on their needs.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement activities that support the goals and objectives of the KCP Connections program.
  • Work with students to address and manage personal, social, financial, and other non-academic issues which adversely affect academic progress and persistence.
  • Act as a first responder to program participants identified as being at-risk for leaving Detroit Mercy.
  • Determine an appropriate, individualized plan of action for each student to address identified concerns.
  • Follow established intervention plan which includes contacting students by email, phone, and in person to discuss identified concerns.
  • Utilize student success tools including intervention software to monitor student progress and to document all contacts with program participants.
  • Conduct regular follow-up and evaluation of student progress and maintain communication with all interested parties.
  • Schedule regular meetings with students as necessary.
  • Manage the annual reporting process for the State of Michigan KCP Initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with the Student Success Center staff, as well as all relevant academic and student service offices.
  • Other activities as assigned to support the retention of students to Detroit Mercy.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A college degree or four to eight years of work experience in a related field.
  • Six months to two years of experience (Equivalent combination of education and employment).
  • Knowledge of the challenges of underprepared or high touch populations in higher education.
  • Appreciation, knowledge, and understanding of various student populations.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience working with Beacon/early-alert software preferred.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Outlook and Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Banner Enterprise System preferred.
  • Experience in data management systems.
  • Knowledge of best practices in Retention and Student Support Services in Higher Education preferred.
  • Familiarity with UDM and its organization, mission, commitments, structures, policies and practices.

  • Experience working with Beacon/early-alert software.
