About the position

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Clarinet in the Department of Music within the College of Arts and Sciences. This full-time position, starting on August 15, 2025, focuses on teaching applied clarinet lessons to undergraduate and graduate music students, engaging in departmental service, and performing in faculty chamber ensembles. The role emphasizes student recruitment and community outreach to enhance the visibility and success of the Department of Music.

Responsibilities

  • Teach applied clarinet and bass clarinet lessons.
  • Teach courses in the music curriculum, as needed, which may include woodwind techniques, pedagogy, and ensemble coaching.
  • Perform as a member of UAB faculty chamber ensembles.
  • Perform a yearly on-campus solo recital.
  • Actively recruit and retain students for the Department of Music.
  • Engage in outreach activities to promote the Department of Music within the university and the broader community.
  • Conduct ensembles according to area(s) of expertise and provide other forms of support within the band program.
  • Engage in department, college, and university service, including participation in faculty meetings, committees, academic advising, and events that contribute to the growth and success of the Department of Music.

Requirements

  • A completed Doctorate in music by August 15th, 2025.
  • Evidence of effective studio teaching and performing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Evidence of significant professional experience as a performer.
  • Evidence of significant experience as an applied instructor at the university level.
  • Evidence of teaching in woodwind pedagogy, techniques, and ensemble coaching/directing.
