About the position

The UC Davis Library is seeking a Community Manager to support the University of California (UC) Open Source Program Office (OSPO) Network. This career position is set to last for 18 months from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension or transitioning to an indefinite role. The UC system encompasses a diverse range of contributors and users, from individual developers to large-scale projects, each with varying levels of awareness, experience, and expertise in open source software. The Community Manager will work under the general direction of the Associate Director and in consultation with the OSPO Leadership Group to connect with researchers and educators across the UC System who develop and/or utilize Open Source Software. In this role, the Community Manager will facilitate the creation and healthy growth of communities of practice, manage online community spaces, assist in surveying community needs, and support education and training events. The position requires close collaboration with OSPO network representatives from UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to a productive and respectful work environment, adhering to the UC Davis Principles of Community. This includes demonstrating consideration for others' priorities and concerns, actively listening, providing constructive feedback, and maintaining a positive attitude. The Community Manager will also be responsible for organizing work effectively to ensure timely progress on multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and maintaining high productivity levels. The position also requires maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive information and compliance with departmental safety guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Connect with researchers and educators across the UC System who develop and/or use Open Source Software.
  • Facilitate the creation and healthy growth of communities of practice.
  • Manage online community spaces and assist with surveying community needs.
  • Assist with education and training events related to Open Source Software.
  • Contribute to a productive and respectful work environment adhering to UC Davis Principles of Community.
  • Demonstrate consideration of others' priorities, opinions, and concerns to assure cooperation among diverse groups.
  • Actively listen and provide helpful feedback and useful information to colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Organize work effectively to achieve timely progress on multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changes in the work environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of protected information and comply with departmental safety guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Demonstrated results in building, supporting, and empowering communities, preferably in a steering role within higher education or the non-profit sector.
  • Experience managing communication and knowledge-sharing platforms.
  • Experience facilitating knowledge flow and communications between stakeholders from different communities (e.g., software developers and researchers).
  • Experience with using Open Source Software in research and/or teaching.
  • Ability to work independently while engaging colleagues and supervisors at strategic moments.
  • Knowledge of open-source ecosystems, preferably with evidence of building or establishing relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Docker, Maven, etc., and build processes.
  • Experience documenting training/teaching materials, e.g., as a Carpentry curriculum developer.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum software development environments.
  • Experience working and collaborating with distributed teams.
  • Knowledge of project management workflow for application development and production.
  • Familiarity with software development, particularly DevOps tools such as Git or GitHub.
