About the position

The Community team at The New York Times is seeking a comment moderator to oversee the review, approval, and curation of reader comments. This role is essential in maintaining a high-quality user experience in a fast-paced environment, ensuring that discussions remain informed and thoughtful. The ideal candidate will have a background in journalism and experience in community building, contributing to the development of The Times's roadmap for enhancing reader engagement.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a high-quality user experience
• Moderate comments posted by NYTimes.com readers according to New York Times moderation guidelines
• Work with editors to carry out departmental initiatives, such as Reporter Replies and NYT Picks
• Share insights about trends in comments with the Audience team and desks and contribute to daily, weekly and monthly reports
• Alert team leaders to emerging issues apparent in the comments
• Assist the newsroom or editorial department on projects
• Track your work through team tools such as Slack, spreadsheets, Airtables and Google Docs
• Perform related work as assigned
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Requirements

• B.A. or B.S. degree, or equivalent work experience
• 3+ years of experience in journalism
• Experience moderating or facilitating online communities or discussion groups
• Basic knowledge of HTML and experience with content management systems
