About the position

The Commercial Insurance Underwriter I at USAA is responsible for implementing and managing underwriting processes for commercial insurance, ensuring compliance with regulations and achieving business objectives. This role involves evaluating risks, making underwriting decisions, and collaborating with internal stakeholders to maintain underwriting policies. The position requires a strong understanding of insurance products and the ability to analyze data to drive decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and manage commercial insurance underwriting processes and programs.
  • Evaluate risk and make underwriting determinations for commercial lines of business.
  • Create and deliver communications to internal business partners regarding underwriting programs and decisions.
  • Contribute to the development of business guidelines and strategies consistent with company policy.
  • Manage multiple underwriting processes and leverage data for recommendations.
  • Serve as a resource for team members on escalated issues.
  • Responsible for projects and initiatives related to underwriting processes.
  • Gather and evaluate data for root cause analysis and process improvement.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are identified and controlled.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 4 years of insurance underwriting experience, with at least 2 years in commercial insurance underwriting.
  • Experience executing underwriting processes and making decisions.
  • Experience applying policy forms and procedures.
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing data for decision-making.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience underwriting a Business Owner Package (BOP) product.
  • CPCU designation.
  • Experience with General Liability and Inland Marine products.
  • Knowledge of Excess/Umbrella products.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to execute in an entrepreneurial/startup environment.
  • US military experience or connection.
