About the position

The Commercial Lines Underwriter I or II at Western National Insurance Group is responsible for developing and managing a book of business by writing and retaining commercial lines accounts through assigned agencies. This role emphasizes building strong agency relationships, analyzing risks, and applying underwriting knowledge to achieve growth and profit goals while ensuring a positive customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains strong agency relationships.
  • Effectively manages an agency territory to achieve established growth and profit goals.
  • Uses established practices, processes, procedures, and underwriting authority level to analyze the operations and exposures of different types of risks.
  • Assesses risks and exposures on new and existing business to identify opportunities to maximize assigned territory loss ratio and growth objectives.
  • Uses research and analysis to develop practical underwriting solutions which are consistent with organization objectives.
  • Applies knowledge of coverages, forms, symbols, and endorsements per line of business.
  • Applies knowledge of rating.
  • Writes new business as defined by annual department goals.
  • Makes decisions guided by policies and objectives within which decisions are required.
  • Uses intermediate knowledge, experience, and available resources to find a wide range of solutions.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve application and process efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Consistently acts according to customer experience standards, including responding quickly, maintaining a positive attitude, building rapport, demonstrating empathy, managing customer expectations, using the proper communication channel for the situation, and taking ownership to ensure the customer's issue is resolved.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound business judgment.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in an underwriting role is preferred.
  • Demonstrated intermediate organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to accomplish multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of industry practices, standards, and underwriting concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred; experience in commercial lines underwriting in lieu of degree is acceptable.
  • Proficient use of various core systems, office and computer equipment, and software packages.
