About the position

As a Commercial Lines Underwriter at Burns & Wilcox, you will play a pivotal role in the specialty insurance industry, where we pride ourselves on providing unparalleled resources and exposure to our team members. Your primary responsibility will be to build, maintain, and grow a book of business, ensuring that our clients receive the best possible coverage for their unique and unconventional needs. You will manage agency relationships and serve as the lead client contact, fostering strong partnerships that drive business success. In this role, you will create and execute a marketing plan aimed at increasing both new and renewal business. You will be responsible for rating, quoting, and binding each risk, determining acceptability, coverage, and pricing for large or complex renewals as well as new business. Additionally, you will develop and submit underwriting referrals to our company brokerage facilities and Burns & Wilcox management, ensuring that all underwriting processes are followed meticulously. Monitoring key metrics will be essential to your success, as you will need to formulate corrective actions that impact new business hit rates, renewal retention, premium growth, and loss ratios. As a leader in our team, you will also have the opportunity to train and develop Assistant and Associate Underwriters, sharing your expertise and fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and grow a book of business
  • Manage agency relationships and serve as lead client contact
  • Create and execute marketing plan to increase new and renewal business

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 3 years of commercial lines underwriting experience required, excess & surplus experience preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in sales and marketing
  • Proven organization skills and ability with a strong attention to detail
  • Interest in continued education and professional development
  • Insurance license, CPCU, CIC or comparable designations preferred
