About the position

The Symicor Group is a boutique talent acquisition firm that specializes in providing top-tier banking and accounting talent. Our client, a bank located in the Boston, MA area, is seeking a Commercial Portfolio Manager. This role is pivotal as it involves independently managing a Commercial Loan portfolio, focusing on both acquiring new clients and deepening relationships with existing ones. The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining a larger lending portfolio, ensuring that the bank's existing clients are well-served while also expanding the client base. In this position, the Commercial Portfolio Manager will monitor loan covenants, structure loan proposals, and underwrite new credits from both existing and new customers. This includes handling renewals, modifications, and conducting annual reviews. The role requires proactive efforts to cultivate referral relationships and target marketing clients in line with the bank's marketing standards. The manager will also be expected to meet and exceed monthly performance goals, which include developing new profitable business relationships and enhancing the cross-sell ratio through deeper client penetration. The position involves significant engagement in both direct and indirect sales calls, representing the bank in various industry-specific trade organizations to promote loan growth. Responsibilities also include preparing financial spreads, performing covenant checks, completing loan reviews, and ensuring timely updates in the bank's electronic document storage system. The manager will analyze financial conditions, income sources, and collateral coverage of borrowers, and will be responsible for collecting updated financial information in accordance with reporting requirements. Additionally, the role includes preparing loan presentation write-ups for management and loan committee approvals, ensuring that all loans and assets are appropriately risk-rated according to the bank's policies.

Responsibilities

  • Independently manage a Commercial Loan portfolio.
  • Monitor loan covenants and structure loan proposals.
  • Underwrite and originate new credits from existing and/or new customers, including renewals, modifications, and annual reviews.
  • Make appropriate loan structure recommendations.
  • Proactively expand the client base by cultivating referral relationships and target marketing clients/prospects.
  • Meet and exceed monthly performance scorecard goals, including developing new profitable business relationships.
  • Enhance the cross-sell ratio through the expansion and deepening of client penetration.
  • Engage in indirect and direct sales calls and represent the Bank in industry-specific trade organizations.
  • Prepare financial spreads, perform covenant checks, and complete loan reviews.
  • Collect updated borrower financial information in accordance with periodic reporting requirements.
  • Prepare loan presentation write-ups for management and loan committee approvals.
  • Ensure loans and other assets are appropriately and timely risk-rated in accordance with the Bank's loan policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent business experience.
  • Four or more years of banking experience with an emphasis on relationship management and commercial lending.
  • Strong background in prospecting for new clients and a demonstrated track record in business development.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, along with leadership qualities.
  • Working knowledge of financial analysis and accounting theory.
  • Ability to write clearly, logically, and analytically.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and demonstrate a strong level of initiative and commitment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to understand accounting, including financial statement spreads, cash flows, and credit analysis.
  • Ability to define problems, proactively identify and articulate risks, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
