About the position

The Commercial Underwriter I at National General is an integral part of a dynamic team responsible for assessing risk and determining the suitability of cases for the company. This role focuses on evaluating business placed in the Commercial product line, specifically aimed at growing the Commercial Auto business profitably. The underwriter will be tasked with evaluating exceptions and underwriting opportunities for non-fleet business, making critical decisions to approve or decline submissions. The position holds the authority to evaluate risks and make underwriting decisions, while any exposures that exceed this authority will be reviewed with Senior Underwriters or the Underwriting Manager before finalizing decisions. In this role, the underwriter will perform risk reviews and upfront underwriting assessments to determine the acceptability of risks associated with new business, renewals, endorsements, and reinstatements. They will serve as a key point of contact for Customer Service and Backoffice teams, implementing agreed-upon underwriting procedures to achieve growth and profit objectives. The underwriter will also be involved in underwriting new business and renewals, providing input into product decisions and procedures, and making recommendations to enhance the current book of business and automate the Commercial Auto product. Additionally, the underwriter will develop and analyze both internal and external data for assigned business segments and lines of business to inform pricing, underwriting, and sales decisions. They will analyze the quality of assigned books of business through agent and profile reviews, audits, and ongoing communication with Product Managers and Sales, helping to determine necessary actions for agent rehabilitation. The underwriter will also develop knowledge of state laws and regulations applicable to the underwriting of commercial vehicles, acting as a subject matter expert for both agents and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Perform risk reviews and upfront underwriting reviews to determine risk acceptability (new business, renewals, endorsements, and reinstatements)
  • Make decisions on risk acceptability
  • Serve as point of contact for Customer Service and Backoffice teams
  • Implement agreed upon underwriting procedures to achieve growth and profit objectives
  • Involvement with underwriting of new business and renewals, including providing some input into product decisions and procedures
  • Implement procedures and guidelines for Commercial Vehicle and make recommendations to Underwriting Manager for changes that will enhance our current book of business and automation of the Commercial Auto product
  • Develop and analyze both internal and external data for assigned business segment(s) and line(s) of business in order to direct pricing, underwriting, and sales decisions
  • Analyze the quality of assigned books of business through agent and profile reviews, audits, and ongoing communication with Product Managers and Sales
  • Help to determine actions needed for agent rehabilitation
  • Serve as a contact for Commercial Vehicle agents
  • Develop knowledge of state and laws and regulations applicable to the underwriting of commercial vehicles and act as a subject matter expert for both agents and customer service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education, training, and work-related experience
  • 6+ months of commercial underwriting experience
  • Ability to establish and maintain agency relationships, identify profitable opportunities, and assist in leveraging business opportunities for other divisions
  • Professional phone etiquette and interpersonal skills
  • Effective leadership and diplomacy skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Negotiation and sales skills

Nice-to-haves

  • 1+ years insurance underwriting experience in Commercial lines
  • Willingness to pursue Insurance professional designations such as IIC, CPCU, AU, and/or ARM
