About the position

The Commercial Underwriter II position at First Citizens Bank is a hybrid role that requires a blend of in-office and remote work. This role is pivotal in supporting the governmental lending team by underwriting commercial portfolios with a high level of complexity. The underwriter will be responsible for providing guidance on structuring, servicing, and analyzing both new and renewal credits. A key aspect of this position involves identifying, gathering, and reviewing financial information to assess borrower risk ratings and determine appropriate loan structuring. The underwriter will also be tasked with assessing and communicating risks to aid in the department's risk mitigation strategies. In addition to underwriting responsibilities, the Commercial Underwriter II will provide service and support to both associates and clients. This includes participating in client calls and potentially identifying cross-sales opportunities. The role may also involve assisting with special projects to enhance commercial lending activities and service capabilities. Furthermore, the underwriter may provide direction and mentorship to less experienced underwriters within the work group, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. Overall, this position requires a strong analytical mindset, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting while managing complex underwriting tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrites commercial credit actions according to applicable regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Reviews financial statements, communicates with clients or prospects, and performs analysis to recommend borrower risk ratings and appropriate loan structuring.
  • Ensures all involved parties are updated on underwriting progress and outcome.
  • Sources, compiles, and interprets financial data to support structuring and approval of loans.
  • Reviews industry information and comparisons, key risks and mitigants, and collateral to form a general business overview of the borrower.
  • Identifies risks through reviews, analysis, and research of new and existing commercial credit requests and relationships.
  • Works closely with Bank associates and partners to resolve risk issues, communicating review schedule and potential changes in the commercial portfolio.
  • Assists in coordinating review and renewal schedules for existing credits, facilitating ongoing risk identification and management.
  • Identifies cross-sales opportunities for new and existing relationships based on analysis activities.
  • Partners with associates and clients to determine needs and structuring of new requests, renewals, and modifications, participating in client and prospect calls as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 4 years of experience in Commercial Lending or Credit Analysis, financial statement spreading, preparation of projections, and trailing twelve month analysis.
  • OR High School Diploma or GED and 8 years of experience in Commercial Lending or Credit Analysis, financial statement spreading, preparation of projections, and trailing twelve month analysis.
  • Ability to travel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience underwriting government/municipal loans.
  • Experience within the credit division of a financial institution.
  • Familiarity with IRS regulations and state statutes as they pertain to government lending processes.
