About the position

SDOT's Transportation Operations Division (TOD) is looking to hire a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer (CVEO). With a Special Police Commission, the CVEO enforces laws and regulations pertaining to commercial vehicle operation and the movement of oversize loads on city streets. This involves interaction with citizens, agencies, and the trucking industry on a daily basis. This position reports to the Advanced Traffic Management Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Weigh and measure trucks to determine compliance with load and size limitations; issue warnings, citations, and notices of noncompliance as they relate to the Seattle Municipal Code, the Revised Code of Washington and the Code of Federal Regulations for commercial vehicles.
  • Work with the Seattle Police Department, Port of Seattle police, and Washington State Patrol to enforce various commercial vehicle equipment and operator laws.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the trucking industry.
  • Ensure Seattle truck permit compliance.
  • Assist in traffic control and investigate commercial vehicle accidents.
  • Enforce laws as they relate to loaded material that is not properly secured and tracking debris upon city streets.
  • Review haul routes proposed as part of construction management plans and on other plans.
  • Testify in court regarding enforcement action taken.
  • Prepare written responses to complaints and requests for information.
  • Maintain a daily log of job activities and prepare written reports.
  • Required overtime during early morning hours and weekends, escorting oversized loads into and out of Seattle.
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience in commercial vehicle regulation and enforcement.
  • Experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer.
  • Current State of Washington driver's license.
  • Ability to qualify for a Special Police Commission.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds of weight and place under large vehicles.
  • Working regular shifts and frequent overtime is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience driving or inspecting motor vehicles of 26,001 LBS. GVW or more.
  • Have a current Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Part A & B and Size, Weight, and Load certification, or the ability to obtain these during employment.
  • Ability to obtain first aid/CPR card.
  • Effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
