About the position

The Communication Specialist at the California School for the Deaf is responsible for enhancing the school's visibility and fostering community understanding of its educational efforts. This role involves managing public relations, social media platforms, and communication strategies to effectively engage with various stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, and the media. Responsibilities

  • Manage and execute a comprehensive communication strategy to increase CSD's visibility.
  • Lead the school's public relations efforts, including developing and overseeing the school's social media platforms.
  • Create social media releases, brochures, newsletters, and website content, maintaining high standards for quality and appropriateness.
  • Write and distribute press releases and handle media inquiries to generate positive coverage of school events and initiatives.
  • Serve as the Public Information Officer during emergencies, facilitating clear and effective communication.
  • Manage the school's social media platforms by planning, creating, and posting content.
  • Provide guidance and support to the school community on utilizing social media platforms.
  • Oversee the school's website content to ensure it is up-to-date, accurate, and engaging.
  • Coordinate the school's accreditation in collaboration with the leadership team and committee.
  • Collaborate with the school leadership team in developing and evaluating the school's Strategic Plan.

Requirements

  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a California Standard Teaching Credential authorizing the holder to teach Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.
  • Strong cultural perspective of Deaf Education and/or experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Fluency in expressive and receptive American Sign Language.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong planning, organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms.
