About the position

The Communications Assistant Director plays a crucial role in managing the Atlanta Department of Transportation's Communications and Community Engagement team. This position is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate responses to media inquiries, addressing crisis communications, guiding community engagement efforts, and providing strategic communications counsel to senior leadership. The Deputy Director will also support the Office's administrative needs and fill in for the Director of Content and the Director of Community Engagement as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Researches, writes, edits, and proofreads published content for the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT).
  • Translates ideas and objectives into messaging that relates to the topic, speaker, and intended audiences.
  • Fact-checks all communications and content to ensure accuracy.
  • Incorporates key Mayoral and ATLDOT priorities into materials according to event and audience.
  • Composes editorials, press releases, statements, and social media messages representing ATLDOT.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of the Department's projects and priorities to inform communications materials.
  • Takes a lead role in developing and editing all editorial content and communications materials.
  • Creates strategic messages, remarks, talking points, and speeches for the ATLDOT Commissioner.
  • Composes departmental briefings and presentations.
  • Develops website content and other editorial content in collaboration with subject matter experts.
  • Creates content for emergency notifications and rapid response messages.
  • Identifies opportunities to enhance ATLDOT collateral and marketing materials.
  • Monitors factors within the Metro area that may affect content direction and current events.
  • Participates in Open Records coordination and Community Engagement Activities.
  • Serves as a liaison to various community groups for positive public relations.
  • Reviews complaints and identifies trends for correction.
  • Responds to questions and requests for information from citizens and city employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, Communications, or English required.
  • 6 to 8 years of experience in writing/editing and content management in government, nonprofit, and corporate communications offices.
  • Familiarity with the City of Atlanta, local neighborhoods, and key stakeholders required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced Degree (Master's) desired, but not required.
