About the position

The Communications & Community Engagement Specialist position is designed to support the Chief Communications Officer in fostering a climate of understanding within the community regarding the district's educational efforts. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the community is well-informed about the district's initiatives aimed at providing quality education to students in a complex and evolving environment. The specialist will be responsible for creating and editing content across various communication platforms, including social media, the district website, and newsletters, to effectively engage with the community and promote district activities. In this part-time role, the specialist will work four hours a day, typically from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with some flexibility required for district events. The position is structured around a school calendar of 223 days per year, running from August through June, and the salary ranges from $25.28 to $35.00 per hour, depending on experience. The starting date for this position is September 16, 2024, or when filled, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The essential functions of the job include creating regular written and video content for the district's webpage and social media, designing documents such as newsletters and brochures, and preparing presentation materials. The specialist will also be responsible for maintaining the district's website, responding to inquiries from staff and the public, and assisting with bond election communications. Additionally, the role involves supporting internal communication systems to keep employees informed and engaged, as well as performing various clerical tasks to support the office's operations.

Responsibilities

  • Create regular, relevant written and video content for district webpage and social media pages.
  • Compose and design documents such as correspondence, agendas, minutes, flyers, newsletters, brochures, and fact sheets.
  • Prepare presentation materials using PowerPoint and Excel charts for internal and external communication.
  • Create, update, and maintain specified pages and information on district and school websites.
  • Respond to inquiries from staff, the public, parents, and students to provide information and direction as needed.
  • Evaluate situations involving staff, students, parents, and the public to take appropriate action or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Handle sensitive material in a confidential manner.
  • Assist in bond election communications.
  • Maintain an internal communication system to keep employees informed and engaged.
  • Assist with preparation, editing, and distribution of special publications such as recruitment brochures and orientation materials.
  • Perform clerical work including proofreading, checking, and recording information on records, and making photocopies.
  • Process documents and materials for dissemination to appropriate parties.
  • Integrate various media into web design and social media communications.
  • Photograph or video events or individuals as needed.
  • Facilitate support for school and department web managers, acting as a coach to help them maintain their websites.

Requirements

  • Prior job-related experience in communications or community engagement.
  • Skill to operate office equipment and use desktop publishing applications for public information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Calendar.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of communication and public information principles, laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities effectively.
