About the position

The Communications Coordinator achieves communications goals and objectives by planning, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating internal and external resources for all communications for the Cowlitz Indian Tribe (CIT). This role ensures the efficient and effective provision of communication efforts and assets in accordance with established laws, regulations, policies, and practical needs of CIT. The position honors and represents the mission, vision, and values of CIT and the Administration department.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, produces, and assists in the direction of all internal and external tribal communications including collaboration with leadership and management to promote the interests of the Tribe.
  • Participates in the development of an overarching communications and public, government, and media relations strategy to achieve the Tribe's goals and objectives.
  • Assists in development, implementation, and coordination of the Tribe's communication plan across all departments and programs.
  • Represents the Tribe to external entities and organizations, as appropriate.
  • Participates in and facilitates the hiring process of additional communications advisors, consultants, and staff as directed.
  • Coordinates the development, distribution, and maintenance of the Tribe's print and electronic communications to include print publications, website content, and social media presence.
  • Facilitates the newspaper editorial team, including story identification and assignment, editing copy, and producing original content.
  • Creates, consolidates, and edits content for the tribal magazine, newsletters, or other media collaboration with designated leadership, staff, and advisors.
  • Promotes and assists tribal departments and programs with communication efforts; assists in the development of applicable communications materials and content across all platforms and media, including print and e-newsletters, brochures, and digital content.
  • Coordinates crisis management communications with tribal leadership, staff, and advisors as directed.
  • Recommends regular and applicable communication policy updates.
  • Maintains positive relationships with government and community stakeholders, media contacts, philanthropic organizations, public relations firms, and other related agencies; serves on boards and steering committees for related organizations, when requested.
  • Upholds professional knowledge by conducting research and attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences as directed.
  • Assists in grant funding efforts for the continuation or expansion of department or program services and functions; refers applicable grant and funding sources to other CIT departments and programs.
  • Prepares and presents reports on the status, activities and plans for current and future operations to the Director, Tribal Manager, Tribal Council, or other designated entity.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Public Relations, Business, Journalism, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of progressive experience in a professional or academic setting in communications, public relations, journalism, entertainment, or related fields.
  • One year of supervisory responsibilities in a professional or academic setting.
  • A combination of relevant education and related work experience may be considered.
  • Valid driver's license is required when driving vehicles for work-related purposes.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background screening / investigation according to the established requirements.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Cowlitz language preferred.

  • Salary range of $76,804.73 - $92,165.66 per year DOE.
