About the position

The Communications Deputy Director at the Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR) plays a crucial role in overseeing the communications staff and coordinating both internal and external strategic communications efforts. This position is responsible for articulating and promoting the Department's mission, programs, and policy priorities, ensuring that clear, accurate, and timely information is provided to employees, the public, and stakeholders. The role involves developing communication strategies, managing procurement processes, and supporting employee engagement initiatives under the direction of the Communications Director.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all DOR employees receive necessary communications and materials to keep them informed and engaged.
  • Provide expertise on employee engagement and communication methodologies, culminating in an internal strategic communications plan.
  • Support the Executive Director's Office and internal divisions in employee communications.
  • Develop and execute an internal communications plan for DOR, including drafting messages for leadership.
  • Lead internal events and initiatives to improve employee engagement and culture.
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, and monitor workflow for the communications team, ensuring quality and deadlines are met.
  • Establish work schedules and review work time and absences for the team.
  • Initiate the hiring process and provide expertise to HR during candidate selection.
  • Recommend promotions and changes in pay, and submit personnel actions.
  • Resolve performance issues and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Identify training needs and provide necessary training for team members.
  • Provide feedback, coaching, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Lead the communications team to provide timely information to support organizational goals.
  • Serve as the Division spokesperson to outside media personnel and act as spokesperson in the absence of the Communications Director.

Requirements

  • Nine (9) years of relevant experience in communications or government, or a combination of education and experience equaling nine (9) years.
  • At least 4 years of management experience, preferably managing matrixed teams.
  • Experience working with the media and maintaining trusted relationships with media and stakeholders.
  • Experience in government relations and public affairs.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and building relationships with various levels of government and organizations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies.
  • Experience as a spokesperson to the media.
  • Experience working in state or local government.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Understanding of Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Cloud, Social Media, and Digital Marketing Tools.
