About the position

The Communications Deputy Director for the Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR) plays a crucial role in overseeing the communications staff and coordinating both external and internal strategic communications efforts. This position is responsible for articulating and promoting the Department's mission, programs, and policy priorities, ensuring that clear, accurate, and timely information is provided to employees, the public, and stakeholders. The Deputy Director assists in developing and implementing communication strategies, managing procurement processes, and supporting employee engagement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all DOR employees receive required communications and materials to keep them informed and engaged.
  • Provide expertise on employee engagement and communication methodologies, culminating in an internal strategic communications plan.
  • Oversee and support the Executive Director's Office and internal divisions in employee support.
  • Develop and execute an internal communications plan for DOR.
  • Draft messages on behalf of the Executive Director and leadership team.
  • Support and lead internal events and initiatives to improve employee engagement and culture.
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, analyze, and monitor workflow, ensuring quality and quantity of work meets standards.
  • Establish work schedules, review and approve work time and absences, and initiate the hiring process.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to HR during the hiring process and resolve performance issues and disputes.
  • Identify training needs and provide necessary training to staff.
  • Lead the communications team to provide timely information to support departmental goals.
  • Serve as Division spokesperson to outside media personnel and assist with media inquiries.

Requirements

  • Nine (9) years of relevant experience in communications or government.
  • A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in communications or government equal to nine (9) years.
  • At least 4 years of management experience, preferably managing matrixed teams.
  • Experience working with the media and developing trusted relationships with media and stakeholders.
  • Experience in government relations and public affairs.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and building relationships with various organizations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies.
  • Experience as a spokesperson to the media.
  • Experience working in state or local government.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Understanding of Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Cloud, Social Media, and Digital Marketing Tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Colorado-based media outlets and landscape.
