About the position

The Communications Specialist Intern at the City of Hopewell is a temporary internship role designed to support the communications department, specifically the Public Information Officer (PIO). The intern will be responsible for designing, creating, and executing high-quality marketing materials intended for both internal and external audiences. The primary mission of this role is to promote and elevate the City of Hopewell brand across various platforms, including city-wide emails, social media channels such as Twitter (X), Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public relations and marketing within a municipal setting. The intern will provide administrative support and exceptional project assistance to the communications office. This includes collaborating with various city departments and partner organizations to develop and implement effective communication strategies that align with departmental and city goals. The role involves creating visuals for diverse platforms, including websites and social media, and designing infographics to convey information on specific topics effectively. Additionally, the intern will serve as an assistant editor for city publications as needed and will be expected to produce original marketing content, both written and visual, for various projects. This internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals pursuing a degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related fields, allowing them to apply their academic knowledge in a practical environment while contributing to the community's communication efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative and exceptional project support to the Office.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of communications, public relations, and marketing strategies to achieve departmental and city goals by working with city departments and partner organizations.
  • Creating visuals for diverse platforms such as websites and social media platforms.
  • Design infographics to inform audiences about specific topics.
  • Serves as assistant editor of the city publications as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Produce original marketing content (written and visual) for existing and new projects to be published.

Requirements

  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree in communications, Public Relations, Marketing, English, Public Administration, Urban Studies, or a related field.
  • Moderate related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience with writing skills (1 year preferred).
  • Proficiency in software such as Canva, Constant Contact, Microsoft Office (Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel), Photoshop, Illustrator, and Adobe.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to commute to Hopewell, VA 23860 (preferred).
  • Ability to relocate to Hopewell, VA 23860 before starting work (preferred).
