About the position

The Communications Director is responsible for overseeing the communication strategy and processes of the office, ensuring effective press coverage and managing external communications. This role involves publishing press releases, hosting press conferences, and building relationships with reporters, as well as shaping messaging and speechwriting. The position also includes managing a team of interns and requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the office's communication strategy and processes.
  • Facilitate press coverage by publishing press releases and hosting press conferences.
  • Build relationships with reporters and pitch stories.
  • Manage external communications including statements, letters, newsletters, social media, and print media.
  • Shape messaging and speechwriting.
  • Manage a team of interns.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of full-time communications and press experience in government, journalism, or campaigns and advocacy.
  • Bachelor's or Associates degree or comparable public service experience.
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of NYC & NYS politics.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to operate under tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and public speaking abilities.
  • Proficient computer skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Photography and graphic design skills.
  • Professional working proficiency in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish.
