About the position

As the Communications Director, you will lead the organization's communications strategy, focusing on promoting and marketing various programs and advocacy efforts. This role is crucial for ensuring consistent branding and messaging across all channels, while also developing strategies to enhance the organization's image and relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an organizational voice with compelling and consistent messaging that reflects the organization's values, mission, and strategic priorities.
  • Identify target audiences and tailor communication strategies to effectively reach and engage them.
  • Steward and build brand awareness through targeted campaigns, partnerships, and media engagement.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate content marketing strategies across multiple channels and mediums to promote the organization and key priorities.
  • Develop and implement crisis communication plans in collaboration with leadership to effectively manage and mitigate potential reputation risks.
  • Produce high-quality, accessible, and engaging content and storytelling for the organization's owned channels including website, email marketing, social media, video and photo shoots in collaboration with program leads.
  • Develop, execute, and evaluate digital marketing campaigns to promote events, fundraising initiatives, advocacy efforts, and awareness campaigns.
  • Monitor social media trends and analytics to identify opportunities for content creation, community engagement, and audience growth.
  • Cultivate a network of local, regional, and national relationships with editors, journalists, influencers, and key stakeholders.
  • Create and distribute press releases, articles, and other materials to convey important messages.
  • Manage a calendar of target press tentpoles and proactively seek out media opportunities, including interviews, features, and thought leadership.
  • Utilize analytics tools and metrics to track the performance of communication initiatives, campaigns, and content across various channels.
  • Generate regular reports and analysis to assess the effectiveness of communication strategies, identify areas for improvement, and inform future decision-making.
  • Develop and manage the communications budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources for maximum impact.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 5+ years of experience managing communications and public relations.
  • Experience overseeing websites, social media, content creation, and marketing.
  • Experience developing and executing PR campaigns and initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing, editing, storytelling, and public speaking with the ability to analyze and articulate complex concepts and issues.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and navigate complex issues.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Data-driven and results-oriented with fluency in PR measurement and reporting tools.
  • Proficiency in or ability to rapidly learn Microsoft, Adobe Suite, Canva, WordPress, Google AdWords, Google Analytics, Constant Contact, and other tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • 10+ years of experience managing communications and public relations; background in nonprofit or mission-driven organizations.
  • Familiarity with autism and issues around the disability community.
