About the position

The Communications Director at Industrious Labs will lead the organization's internal and external communications strategy, overseeing brand identity and managing a communications team. This role is crucial for enhancing the visibility and credibility of Industrious Labs as it transitions from a start-up to a more mature organization. The Communications Director will develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies, manage media relations, and ensure that the organization's messaging aligns with its mission of climate justice and industrial transformation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive communications strategy to enhance visibility and credibility.
  • Identify opportunities for writing and speaking engagements to promote the organization.
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media influencers.
  • Ensure consistent and compelling brand messaging across all platforms.
  • Oversee the development of published materials and storytelling tools.
  • Manage communications-related contractor relationships for various projects.
  • Expand and maintain the organization's website and social media presence.
  • Serve as a Department Head on the leadership team, contributing to overall strategy and culture.
  • Manage communications staff, providing feedback and conducting performance reviews.
  • Determine and manage the communications budget.

Requirements

  • At least 15 years of communications expertise in a policy or advocacy environment.
  • Experience developing and delivering communications strategies in an advocacy context.
  • Proven leadership and strategy development skills.
  • Ability to manage a small and growing team with competing demands.
  • Expertise in branding, messaging, media relations, and communications tactics.
  • Outstanding project management abilities to ensure timely and budget-compliant campaigns.
  • Experience in pitching stories and building media relationships.
  • Strong social media skills and understanding of its integration into communications strategies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working across lines of race, class, gender, and geography.

Nice-to-haves

  • Background in journalism, public relations, or campaign communications.
  • Fundraising experience and departmental budget management.
  • Prior start-up experience in a growing organization.
  • Ability to lead through influence in a matrixed environment.
  • Content knowledge in climate, clean energy, or the industrial sector.
